AFRICA | AMERICAN STORIES: IDENTITY AND DREAMS

Personal History

Within me are a lot of things.
Within me is what heaven brings.
Africa, Europe, China-
they are all the same
because that's where my ancestors used to play their games.
Within me is Rhythm & Blues
Some people say they're very amused.
My big mouth is not a shout,
it is just trying to tell you what I'm talking about.
Within me are some Christian beliefs,
how Adam and Eve only wore leaves.
My legs and eyes are what I say are the best,
but I'm not saying trying to say they're better than the rest.
Within me are different traditions,
but one of those isn't watching "Inside Edition."
I love the sun how it pounds with heat.
It looks like it's just sitting in the sky on a tiny seat.
