(early to mid-1600s to mid-1800s) During the 1600s an oba died without a direct heir and capable chiefs took over the rule of Benin. Eventually, Oba Akenzua subdued these chiefs with the help of Ehennua, a mighty commander. The monarchy was restored. |

This detail from the 17th century engraving by Dutch writer Olfert Dapper shows a celebration in the streets of Benin City. Oba Akenzua ushered in an era of peace and royal prosperity. Trade grew with Dutch merchants and the kingdom flourished. But by close of this period, the power of neighboring rulers, along with growing British interests in West Africa, began to eclipse the kingdom of Benin.
