Worldly Power
The Oba ruled the human world

The Oba ruled the human world According to tradition, the Oba spoke for the Edo people. Most aspects of daily life came under palace control. The Oba once controlled all trade with outsiders. Today market forces largely determine Benin City's economy, although the Oba still receives tribute from his followers. He presides over palace debates and delegates power to chiefs who rule the provinces on his behalf.

The people upheld his power

The Oba's power still rests on his people's support. While the Oba continues to be central to the royal court and kingdom, he cannot rule without the consent and participation of his officials, his ancestors and the gods.
