Divine Kingship

Like a riverbank links land and water, the Oba links the Edo people with their gods. Tradition says he rules life on land just as his counterpart, the god Olokun rules the waters. Passing between the human and spirit worlds, the Oba acts on his people's behalf.

Like the leopard, king of the wilderness, the Oba is swift to pounce upon evil doers. In the past, his divine nature gave him the right to order an execution or sacrifice.
