The Edo say, "Smiths and woodworkers will never suffer from poverty." Because art is so important in Benin, artists have a special place in Edo culture. Artists are organized into guilds, each with its own special ward in Benin City.
Two of the most important royal art guilds are casters and carvers. Casters make sculptures to adorn the Oba's altar, as well as other metal objects. Carvers work in ivory and wood, carving everything from tusks for altars to stools and staffs.
Guilds are organized into ranks High-ranking members manage the work of the guild. They assign commissions to artists and make sure completed work is up to guild standards. Top-ranked members often have ceremonial palace duties and may no longer create art.
