A hero's son probably commissioned this tusk to honor his father

Band 1

We believe the son of the great chief Erebo hired royal artists to carve this tusk. The carving in the middle of the first band may represent Erebo, flanked by two generals. This band also honors Erebo's great-grandfather, the historic war chief Ehennua. On the back of the tusk, opposite the image of Erebo, is a crocodile that may stand for Ehennua's victory long ago; he crushed opposition to the Oba as a crocodile crushes its prey.
