This band shows an image of an oba between two attendants and has great significance
in Benin. The Edo believe that
the Oba's legs contain so much spiritual force they become like
electric mudfish. Though the Oba's legs may look strong and human
here, their power makes it difficult for him to walk.
Leopards, mudfish and other symbols may tell of the Oba's power
Though the Oba depends on his people's support, symbols surrounding
him emphasize that he's
the most powerful man in the kingdom. The flat
elephant trunk that ends in a human hand, as shown here, recalls an important
story.
An embattled oba defeated a powerful town chief with the aid of
Ezomo Ehennua, the great-great-grandfather of the Ezomo who
commissioned
this tusk.
On this band, a dangerous electric mudfish hangs from the Oba's
waist to remind people of his power. The succulent, edible mudfish
coiled
on the back may show the prosperity the Oba
can bring. |
