Symbols of female spiritual power surround the first Queen Mother

Band 8

This band centers on Idia, the first Queen Mother. Idia affected Benin history more than any other woman. Her extraordinary occult power enabled her son Esigie to become oba, even though he was not the direct heir to the throne. Esigie relied on Idia's support throughout his reign.

Idia is always shown wearing a net of coral beads over a high headdress and crossed baldrics - heavy straps that cross her chest. Her skirt is straight and her legs are covered with anklets. She is flanked by female attendants; one holds a mirror charm to neutralize evil. Often a figure of Idia appears near an image of the Oba supported by two attendants.
