Masks honored the Queen Mother at her funeral

This photo shows members of a secret society, a group of men who maintained law and order, wearing elephant and buffalo masks at the funeral of King Njoya's mother. Many Grassfields peoples looked to the Queen Mother to balance her son's power, since she was one of the few people who could tell the king what to do.
