Have some tea

I'm Marietou's brother Ibrahima (EE-bra-HE-ma). Please sit down and join us. Before you do anything else, you must have something to drink - it's part of teranga (ta-RANG-go), our Senegalese tradition of hospitality. When we demonstrate teranga, it's a good reflection on our family. It shows that we have what your elders in America call "home training" or "good manners."

In Senegal we drink a variety of refreshing beverages made from fruits and herbs, such as cool bissap and spicy ginger beer. But our favorite beverage is green China tea with mint, prepared and drunk in a special way, known as ataya (ah-TA-ya). After a meal, we offer ataya to our guests.

To watch Ibrahima share tea with his friends, select one of the following options. Note: Parts of the following video are in French with English subtitles. The subtitles may be difficult to read on the sixteen screen sized presentations.
