Bird Alphabet Book

SUMMARY: Create a bird book with pictures from A to Z.

Background: Birds are a diverse group consisting of over 9,000 species, inhabiting all parts of the world from puffins in the Arctic, quetzals in the rain forest, road runners in the desert to the birds in your backyard.

Materials: Colored pencils, markers, unlined paper, pictures of different birds, and resource books.

How to:

  1. Brainstorm with your class. Write down on the board a bird to match each letter in the alphabet.
  2. If you have letters left over that do not correspond with a bird, create research teams in your class. Assign each team to find a bird that begins with that letter.
  3. Once you have a complete list, each child can create an illustrated bird alphabet book; A is for albatross, B is for bluebird, C is for crow... For each letter write the name of the bird and draw a picture of the bird.
  4. Combine all of the pages to make the Alphabet Book.

How to:

  1. Each week the students are assigned a letter. During that week they have to either draw a picture or find and cut out a picture of a bird that begins with that letter.
  2. Collect all of the pages and put them together. By the end of 26 weeks they will have their own bird alphabet book.
