Hall of Birds Floor Plan

This presentation is designed to assist the educator in preparing students for a visit to the Ralph W. Schreiber Hall of Birds. Different sections of the Hall of Birds are identified and coded by letters on this floor plan. Use the letters to locate materials to help prepare for a visit.

Below are brief descriptions of each of the exhibit sections, followed by suggested activities and corresponding on-line resources.

A Birds Of The World Reference Room (mounted specimens and reference drawers)

Things to do:

  • Art - draw from mounted specimens
  • Classify - identify similarities and differences among species, genera, and orders
  • Observe - compare adaptations, discuss "form= function"
  • Explore - self-help reference drawers

B Welcome Room (general orientation room)

Things to do:

  • Listen - "Percy" the Pelican gives automated welcome
  • Discover - who are the "first Place" birds

C Marsh Habitat (3 minute day to night animated marshland cycle)

Things to do:

  • Listen - how many different birds can you hear
  • Discuss - cycles/ diurnal vs. nocturnal
  • Discuss - ecosystems, interdependence of species

On-line Resources:

D Birds: Inside- Out (interactive exhibits on bird physiology)

Things to do:

  • Compare - similarities and differences in bird skeletons and systems to humans and other animals
  • Explore - many push-button interactive displays

On-line Resources:

E Adaptations (interactive exhibits, birds' specialized features, lifestyles, and behaviors)

Things to do:

  • Discuss - form= function, how lifestyle/habitat affects features
  • Identify - what different functions do different feathers have

F Communication (bird songs, coloration, and mating rituals)

Things to do:

  • Discuss - how different animals communicate
  • Do - mime different bird behaviors
  • Identify - what animals show sexual dimorphism (when males and females look different)

G Flight (wing shapes, physics of flight)

Things to do:

  • Watch - 10 minute. video of aerial footage of flight
  • Compare - different flight styles to different wing structures

H Eggs/Nests (variety of eggs and nests on display)

Things to do:

  • Hypothesize - study the nests to determine in which habitat each bird lives

On-line Resources:

I Condor Mountain (habitat diorama of the endangered California Condor)

Things to do:

  • Discuss - what does it mean when a species becomes extinct
  • Discuss - how has man's impact affected the condor

On-line Resources:

J Birds And Man (representation of birds in modern culture, man's effect on birds)

Things to do:

  • Identify - how many bird-related commercial characters can students name

On-line Resources:

K Rain Forest Habitat (two-story walk through rain forest habitat)

Things to do:

  • Observe - locate the birds in the rain forest habitat
  • Listen - how many different bird songs can you hear
