Western Camel
During the last Ice Age, camels roamed the Los Angeles
basin. The extinct Western camel (Camelops hesternus), which stood seven
feet tall at the shoulder, was similar in size to the living Asian bactrian
camel. The camels, browsing on sage and bunch grass, disturb a flock of
red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius sp.), still commonly seen in southern
California.
