Columbian Mammoth
The Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) was the largest animal ever trapped in the Rancho La Brea asphalt. Some individuals were more than thirteen feet (four meters) high at the shoulders, similar to the size of the African elephant. The Columbian mammoth weighed as much as ten tons (nine metric tons), and its enormous tusks were up to fourteen feet (4.25 meters) long. Its teeth were well-suited for chewing grass. Because of its large size, it would have had few natural enemies, but the saber-toothed cat may have preyed on its young.
