Fossils of Rancho La Brea

Western Horse

The Western horse (Equus occidentalis), tall as a modern quarter horse but more heavily built, was one of the last species of horse native to North America. It became extinct at the end of the Ice Age.

The coat pattern of the Western horse is conjectural.
