At what age did you choose your career?

I knew I wanted to be a biologist when I was twelve, but it wasn't until much later that I found a way to use my biological training.

Was there a specific event or person associated with that decision?

A very enthusiastic biology teacher was instrumental in my decision to pursue a career in biology.

What has been the greatest experience of your career?

Being able to take my daughter to Asia, to show her some of the marvelous parks and animals in a part of the world where I have spent a lot of my life.

What specialized skills do you need for the job?

Besides having a college degree in botany, zoology, or biology, good writing and other communication skills are very important.

What is the most frustrating part of your job?

There is really no frustrating part of my job.

Any advice for young people who are considering a career in zoology?

Do what you love and what you are good at. Consider nontraditional ways to use your interest in zoology. With a graduate degree in zoology you can become writers, producers, zoo curators, teachers, and many other professions.

If you could be any cat, which would you be?

A domestic cat in a cat -- loving household-there must be no better life.
