Dr. Anne E. Pusey
is a professor of behavioral ecology.
Although her specialty is chimpanzees, she has been studying lions with
Craig Packer for over fifteen years.
At what age did you choose your career?
I always wanted to study animals. I love watching
animals and trying to figure out why they do the things that they do.
Was there a specific event or person associated
with that decision?
When I was in high school, I read books by the
ethologist Niko Tinbergen (one of the founders of the scientific study
of animal behavior) and then worked at his field station. He was also one
of my undergraduate teachers.
What has been the greatest experience of your
career?
Studying chimpanzees and lions in their natural
habitats.
What specialized skills do you need for the
job?
A Ph.D. in biology and good communication skills.
What is the most frustrating part of your job?
I have too many different things that I want to
do. It is hard to budget my time between teaching, research, and family
and give each the time it deserves.
Any advice for young people who are considering
a career in zoology?
If you really have a passion for it, work hard
and persevere, and some opportunity will come up. Jobs are difficult to
get, but there are some.
If you could be any cat, which would you be?
A lion.
