Betty Denny Smith
in both her previous job as the director of the American Humane Association,
and now as a consultant for Disney, is responsible for the protection of
animals used in movies and TV.
At what age did you choose your career?
I have loved, protected, and rescued animals, particularly cats, all
my life. I didn't choose this career until I was an adult.
Was there a specific event or person associated with that decision?
I saw abuse to animals in an area near my home and decided to quit my
job and devote the rest of my life to animals -- that was twenty-six years ago.
What has been the greatest experience of your career?
When I was Director of Animal Control we were able to abolish the inhumane
use of the decompression chamber. The writing of "Guidelines for Use
of Animals In Films" was also a great achievement.
What specialized skills do you need for the job?
Administrative abilities -- being able to visualize and solve problems
and to work with a diverse group of people.
What is the most frustrating part of your job?
People -- at times.
Any advice for young people who are considering a career in zoology?
Besides an education, get as much practical experience as possible.
If you could be any cat, which would you be?
A house cat.
