Virginia Opossum

Didelphis virginiana

This nocturnal marsupial first started showing up in agricultural areas of California in the early 1900s, having been introduced from the eastern United Stated by humans.  Opossums are now common throughout the state and are quite well-adapted to the urban environment.  They are known for their distinctive appearance and for “playing ‘possum” when frightened or threatened.

Taxidermied specimen available for loan from the Members' Loan Service.
