About the Loan Programs . . .
Loaning collections to the public is a long-running tradition at the Natural History Museum. Early in the Museum’s history, staff felt that valuable collections, while not useful for academic research, could be made available to schools, libraries, families, and the public for learning. In August of 1926, the Museum Extension Division was born, with the goal of assembling valuable surplus material and circulating it to prospective borrowers. Over 75 years later, the Museum's loan program is the longest running and one of the most unique education programs in the Museum’s history.
The Museum's Loan Program encompasses both the Members' Loan Service and the Classroom Collections. Between the two services, the Museum’s Loan Program impacts hundreds of thousands of students and families each year with its tantalizingly rich collection of artifacts, specimens, exhibits, and models.
The Members' Loan Service is a walk-in service for individuals who are either museum members or educators. Museum visitors can stop by and borrow from the collection of artifacts, specimens, and teaching kits at its current location on the Museum’s ground floor. Loans are for two weeks, and once a member, only requires a small fee and compliance with the borrowing requirements in order to ensure the care of the items.
The Classroom Collections are collections of museum quality specimens, objects, and models that are available for loan to any qualified School or School District for the period of one school year.

“If you are a teacher, artist, lecturer, minister, who believes that a picture is worth 10,000 words and a mounted animal perhaps half a million, call the lending service.” Dr. John E. Baur, 1962
