Rules and Requirements

  1. Borrowing of loan materials is offered as a benefit of Museum Membership.
    Discounted “Educator” Memberships and FREE “School Loan Service” memberships are available.
  2. Borrower must present all of the following identification upon loan:
    • Current Natural History Museum Membership Card OR School Loan Service Membership Card
    • Current Calif. Driver’s License or Calif. I.D. Card from the D.M.V.
  3. Damage/Loss Deposit: Borrower must supply the Members’ Loan Service with current credit card information as a deposit against potential damage or loss.
  4. Members’ Loan Service accepts Cash or Checks (made out to “NHM Foundation”). Purchases made with credits cards accrue an additional 3% fee.
  5. Materials are loaned for a 2 week period and cannot be renewed or reserved.
  6. Materials may ONLY be checked out and returned during the Members’ Loan Service operational hours by Members’ Loan Service staff.
  7. Quantities are limited to 3 exhibits (or 6 insect exhibits) and up to 2 Teaching Trunks.
  8. All materials must be returned before additional items are checked out.
  9. Late Fine: There is a 50¢ per day late fine for the first 7 days. The late fine increases to $1.00 per day from day 8 on. Late fines for Teaching Trunk rentals are $1.00 per day for the first 7 days and $1.50 per day for day 8 on.
  10. Borrower accepts full financial responsibility for all loan materials while they are checked-out in their name . The Members’ Loan Service Coordinator determines all damage and replacement values.  Borrowers utilizing School Loan Service memberships accept full personal responsibility for items checked out in their name.
  11. Exhibit Care:
    • All Loan exhibits must remain in the intended upright position at all times (including during transportation).
    • Plexiglass exhibits should not be stacked!
    • Direct exposure to ultraviolet light should be avoided.
    • The borrower should never attempt any repairs. All repairs are to be maintained by trained museum staff.
  12. Failure to comply with the loan program rules may result in a loss of borrowing privileges.
