COLLAPSE?

TOKUGAWA JAPAN (A.D. 1603 - 1868)

While some societies - like the Maya - have had a disastrous impact on their environment, others have successfully overcome their problems.

During the Tokugawa era in Japan, the ruling shogun solved the problem of dwindling timber resources so vital to their needs.

In this section of Collapse?, a symbolic tree circle and period objects - from woodworking tools and almanacs to a full set of samurai armor presented in an exquisitely recreated traditional interior - tell the story of measures taken to establish sustainable supplies of timber.

It is a lesson for today.
