Writing in nature journals
What you need:
- A spiral notebook (or lined paper on a clipboard) and pencil for each student
- Thermometer and watch to record temperature and time of observations, at least one per class

What to do:

1. Take students outside to the schoolyard with their writing materials, thermometer and watch. Choose a time when few students are out in the yard.

2. Ask them to note the date, time and temperature (simply note describe the weather) in their journals. You will be taking them out several more times and they can use this information to compare their observations.

3. Once students are accustomed to being outdoors, ask them which natural things they hear, smell or see. Have students spread out and write down observations in their nature journals. They should note bird calls, the weather, if they can feel the wind, see flowers in bloom in the neighborhood and anything else they notice about their environment.

4. Repeat several more times throughout the year. You may also try this if you go on a field trip to a local park or natural area. Ask students to look back at their observations and compare days. What is different about each day? What is the same?
