Not as Easy as it Seems Unexpected Delays A Tough Road Challenging Field Conditions

Unexpected Delays

While in Da Lat, a city located in the province of Lam Dong and just outside our intended study site, we ran into delays. There were several additional governmental groups that we needed permission from before we could begin work in the field. Completing these steps would take several days and we found ourselves trying to make the most of our time in the town of Da Lat.

Sometimes this involved touring museums to learn more about local species or trips to a nearby zoo to view Vietnamese wildlife. We even learned some new card games in order to pass the time in our small hotel rooms on the rainy days. Dr. Horovitz tried to translate the French news for us so we could stay up to date on the World Trade Center attacks and the political fallout. When news came that we would not be granted permission to work in Lam Dong, we had to make some quick changes to our travel plans. That same day we flew back to Hanoi, our starting point, and began planning for an alternative worksite.
