Yen Bai

Most people would consider Yen Bai a perfect field site. Located a day's walk from the nearest town, this forest was where Dr. Horovitz and Dr. Kizirian were able to collect a large variety of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians -- some of which have not yet been described. The moist conditions made leeches common and hiking the tough terrain was a challenge for everyone. Though it took a while to get to this point in the trip- much of what they had hoped to find was right here.

Crossing by ferry Crossing the River
On the way to our field site in Yen Bai, we had to cross a large river using this ferry. Even our vehicles had to ride the ferry!

Transporting gear with help from people and a pony Transporting the Gear
To move through the jungle with all of our gear, we had to hire porters to help us carry our supplies. They often used horses to help with the transportation.

A waterfall coming out of thick forest Into the Forest
Yen Bai was a beautiful, primary forest with lots of plant and wildlife diversity and rushing streams.
