A.R.M.S.

Artificial Reef Matrix Structures

a.k.a.

Arrays, Colonization Structures, Shrimp Hotels, Crab Casinos

A.R.M.S were developed in order to collect cryptofauna from reef areas in a nondestructive and somewhat quantifiable manner by allowing invertebrates to move into and foul a system of hard and soft substrates of measurable area and volume over a period of one year. Although the main intent in using these structures was to collect in deeper waters more efficiently, we also hope to get some idea of location (oceanographic) effect on cryptofaunal community structure and development around the island. Eight of these structures were placed around the island at a depth of 30 feet, two more were placed in waist deep water near shore (White Bay finger reefs, and North Bay shallows).
