This essay is the result mainly of one roll of film shot free hand during a quick late afternoon hike along the western ridge of Guana Island in July of 2001. The film was Fuji Velvia (iso 50) shot with a 105 mm macro lens and a ring flash. Quality of the shots varies considerably due to the somewhat strenuous hike coupled with free hand shooting, and to low light levels within the under growth. The dark shots (some slides were nearly black) were digitally enhanced as best as possible in order to recover and present the information. The late afternoon lighting accounts for the warm color cast. Shots of Epidendrum cilliare were taken using a digital point and shoot camera.

This project was made possible by the Guana Island Marine Invertebrate Survey. Orchid identification based on an unpublished botanical list for the island.
