The genus Tolumnia
(formerly included in the genus Oncidium) is native to
the Caribbean region. Many species grow in fairly dry areas suspended
in mid air with their long roots entwined throught the small branches
of scrub bushes. The roots absorb morning dew, which is then stored
in the thick leaves. In captivity the plants must be grown in
such a way that the roots dry very quickly, so small 1 or 2 inch
diameter clay pots filled with loose, well draining media such
as a mix of charcoal and bark are often used.
