EMPLOYMENT | POSITIONS AT THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

GALLERY INTERPRETER

The Education Department of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County seeks GALLERY INTERPRETERS responsible for interacting with museum guests and for providing information about the museum's halls, exhibits, and programs to the general public. Gallery Interpreters design and present educational experiences to school and family groups, and assist in programs and activities throughout the museum, including the Discovery Center. Because a primary responsibility in the Discovery Center and Insect Zoo involves the presentation of live animals, Gallery Interpreters are expected to acquire proficiency handling and teaching with the resident animals. Gallery Interpreters are expected to maintain a visible and approachable presence at all times.

Candidates must demonstrate the following education, skills and experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, or Theater is required.
• Basic knowledge of word processing and email.
• Must be available to work weekends and during traditional school holidays.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time, and also stoop and grasp.
• Must be proficient in the English language and demonstrate excellent communication and presentation skills, particularly with the ability to relate to children and adults. Conversational ability in a second language, such as Spanish, is highly desirable, but not required.
• Must be customer-service oriented, interested in enhancing the experiences of museum guests, and willing to work as a member of an action-oriented, creative team.
• One-year experience in an educational setting, either as paid staff or volunteer.
