CURATORIAL ASSISTANT (Archaeological Collections)

 

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is engaged in a major seismic upgrade of its original 1913 building and adjacent spaces.  The project will culminate in the installation of four new permanent exhibits.  As part of this larger project, the Ancient Latin America Hall, displaying over 600 archaeological objects from North, Central and South America, will be taken down and the objects placed in a new visible storage exhibit.  We seek a Curatorial Assistant to join an outstanding team working on our Ancient Latin American archaeological collections as part of this larger project. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist Anthropology Collection Manager, Collections Technician, Museum Registrar and Conservator in the de-installation of the Ancient Latin American Hall. This will include but is not limited to the removal, condition reporting, photographing, packing and transporting the artifacts to their new location.
  • Assisting with the implementation of an onsite open storage exhibit of the same de-installed objects.
  • Limited preventative conservation of objects under the supervision of Collections Manager and Conservator.
  • Use computerized databases and digital technology related to this project to assist in the collections management of these collections.
  • Artifact research and documentation.

Qualifications Include:

  • Graduation from an accredited college with a BS/BA (MA desirable) in Anthropology or Art History with a specialization in the Art and Archeology of Ancient Latin America (Mesoamerica, Central America and South America).
  • At least 1 year of experience involving collections management, identification or classification, preparation and conservation of artifacts for study, research or exhibition.
  • Must be able to work as a member of a team and independently with little direct supervision.
  • Excellent oral and written English skills required, Spanish reading and comprehension ideal.

This is a full time 18 month position and is available immediately.
