The Natural History Museums Exploration Guides are created in alignment with both the National Science Education Standards (1996) and the California Science Content Standards (1998). We encourage you to use them in conjunction with your established classroom curriculum. While the activities in the guide can be used with a variety of grade levels, the guide is especially matched to the topics in life science, for Kindergarten through Grade 4. Specific connections are found with the following standards:

Kindergarten (2a, c) Different types of plants and animals inhabit the Earth. Technical Support
Grade 1 (2a, b, c, d) Plants and animals meet their needs in different ways.
Grade 2 (2a, b, c) Plants and animals have predictable life cycles.
Grade 3 ( 3 a , b, c, d) Adaptations in physical structure or behavior may improve an organisms chance for survival.
Grade 4 (2b) All organisms need energy and matter to live and grow. (3a, b, c) Living organisms depend on one another and on their environment for survival.
