Overview: Biomes are specialized ecosystems with distinct plant life, animal life, and climate. Students will write about a biome of their choice.
This lesson is part of a series. Select this text to learn more about the series and how to extend its usefulness, or proceed directly to a list and summary of related mammal activities.
Subjects: Science and Language Arts
Grades: 2-4
Length: Involved
Materials:
- Resource Material
- Lined Paper
- Pencils
Procedures:
1. Provide students with background on the different biomes outlined in this guide. Have each student select a biome to write about. The assignment can range from a couple of sentences to a few pages depending on your grade level. Some students may want to write a poem about their biome.
2 . Make available sources of information. These can range from picture books to Web sites that are child friendly. The listing of resources in the back of this guide may be helpful.
3. Students should include four basic types of information on their biome:
A. Where it can be found
B. Types of plants in the area
C. Types of animals in the area
D. Climate of the area
4 . After completing the assignment, have students share what they wrote in a small group.
Extension: Incorporate technology into your study of biomes.
If you have a presentation program like Hyperstudio or PowerPoint, students can create a presentation on their biome. An alternative method is to have students use a drawing program to make a picture of their chosen biome and a word processing program to describe the picture. These can be mounted side by side on a large piece of construction paper.
