EXPLORING MAMMALS | HELP WANTED: FISH AND GAME WARDEN

What does a fish and game warden do?
A fish and game warden has a lot of different responsibilities. First, wardens are peace officers who can enforce laws like a regular police officer. Usually they work at enforcing laws that protect wildlife. In addition, they need to know about the wildlife they are protecting. Wardens must be familiar with the biology and life cycles of the different animals in the area. They are also educators, spending a lot of time helping the public understand the laws that protect wildlife and why it’s important to follow those laws.

Who can be a fish and game warden?
In order to be a fish and game warden, the Department of Fish and Game would like you to have experience with the outdoors and wildlife. Working with the public should also be an interest. Fish and game wardens need to have a college degree.

We asked a game warden about their work:

Best Part of the Job:
The fish and game warden we spoke with liked catching people who were harming the environment through activities such as poach i n g. Poaching is killing or capturing an animal that is protected by law. He liked knowing that he was protecting wildlife so it can be enjoyed by the public who followed the rules.

Toughest Part of the Job:
Sometimes it can be hard to make people understand why certain laws exist. The warden we spoke with was often in this situation and felt frustrated when people did not understand the importance of protecting all wildlife.

If you see someone breaking these laws, you can call the anonymous poaching hotline:
1-888-DFG-CALTP
