INSTALLATION PROBLEMS

(Version 1)

WINDOWS XP:
We have had numerous reports of problems running the program following installation. If the program fails to run using the screen shortcut and/or the Start Menu shortcut, check the properties for the shortcut. The "Target" and "Start in" lines must refer to the CD-ROM drive in which the Photo-Atlas CD has been inserted.

Shortcut properties:
Target: X:\CDMIN\SLRUNV4.exe X:\CDMIN\MINERAL.LAP
Start in: X:\CDMIN
where "x" is the letter corresponding to the C
D-ROM drive in which your CD has been inserted.

If you are unable to change the "Target" and "Start in" lines, you can set up a new shortcut with the entries noted above. Detailed instructions for doing this can be found below under "To set up the Photo-Atlas without using the installation program".

PHOTO-ATLAS VERSIONS 1.0 and 1.1:
The installation program that was
included with versions 1.0 and 1.1 may not work properly if there are programs running in the background. To remedy this situation, you have two options:

To get the installation program to work try this:
We recommend turning off any background programs such as virus scanners and screen savers. Also check to see if there is a driver loaded called MSWHEEL and, if so, disable it. You can do this by using Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the "Close Program" box. It might also help to delete any old temporary files in your Windows "temp" directory. After you have done all this, try running the install program again. Once the install program is finished, restarting your computer will restart any background programs that are set to automatically load when your system starts.

To set up the Photo-Atlas without using the installation program:
In Windows 95, 98, 2000 and XP, create a shortcut to the Photo-Atlas on your desktop in the following way. Right click on the Windows desktop and choose "New" and "Shortcut". In the command line box, type "x:\cdmin\slrunv4.exe x:\cdmin\mineral.lap" (without the quotes) where "x" is the letter corresponding to the CD-ROM drive in which your CD has been inserted. When prompted for a shortcut name, we suggest "Photo-Atlas of Minerals", but you can type anything you want. The icon that you get with this method is the three linked rings that symbolize the SuperLink program that was used to create the Photo-Atlas. If you would prefer to use the "official" Photo-Atlas icon, you can download it by clicking on the icon below. After saving it to a directory on your hard disk, install it as follows: (1) Right click on the SuperLink icon on the desktop, (2) choose "Properties" and then "Change icon", (3) Pick the Photo-Atlas icon by using "Browse" to find the icon in the directory to which you copied it on your hard disk.
