This presentation is an examination of the original introduction of the concepts of "homogeny" and "homoplasy" by E. Ray Lankester in 1870, and his suggestion that these terms replace "homology." The basis for this examination is derived from my recent research in the areas of (1) the inferential basis of phylogenetic systematics, (2) the correct application of the requirement of total evidence in phylogenetics, and (3) the inferential relations between homology and phylogenetic hypotheses.
