One of the long-standing foundations of biology has been the concept of homology, which has often been characterized as "Shared similarities due to common ancestry." Certainly within evolutionary biology and systematics, homology has garnered a great deal of attention. So much so, that an extensive literature exists on the subject for well over 100 years.
