The Natural History
Museum's History Department exists to advance knowledge and to enable
people of all ages, backgrounds, and interests to understand and
appreciate their cultural heritage. To promote such an understanding,
the History Department assembles, conserves, and interprets collections
that focus primarily on the history of California and the Southwest,
but also treats United States history. The regional collections
speak to the singular influence of California on the rest of the
nation; the national collections set the regional materials within
the American experience.
