Lindsey Groves:
Collections Manager
e-mail: lgroves@nhm.org
BS Geology: Northern Arizona University, 1983
MS Geology [emphasis in molluscan paleontology]: California State University,
Northridge, 1991
Mr. Groves came to LACM as a Curatorial Assistant on a National Science Foundation
(NSF) collection grant in 1988 whilst pursuing his MS in geology at California
State University, Northridge. After completion of his thesis he was promoted
to Project Manager to assist on a subsequent NSF grant to begin collection computerization.
In 1993 the Malacology Section was merged with the Invertebrate Paleontology
Section and Mr. Groves was then promoted to Collection Manager of both sections.
With the addition of new IP collection manager in February of 2002, he has now
returned to Malacology on a full-time basis. Current Malacology collection projects
include databasing of the orphaned UCLA Recent mollusk collection, databasing
of the worldwide cypraeid collection, databasing of nudibranch voucher material
collected by Malacology curator Ángel Valdés and associates, and
databasing of NE Pacific gastropod voucher material for curator emeritus James
McLean.
His research interest involves the paleontology, biostratigraphy, paleobiogeography,
and systematics of the Late Jurassic to Recent molluscan superfamily Cypraeoidea
(cowries and kin) and the Late Cretaceous to Recent family Haliotidae (abalones).
Geographic area of interest includes the entire Western Hemisphere with an emphasis
on the eastern Pacific region from southern British Columbia to central Chile
and the entire Caribbean Basin. He has described new cypraeid taxa from Late
Cretaceous through early Pliocene strata (see list below). Current research
projects include: descriptions of new Paleocene and Eocene cypraeids and ovulids
from Washington, California, Baja California, and Peru; preparation of a companion
volume to Keen & Bentson’s (1944) monumental Check list of California
Tertiary marine Mollusca with Richard L. Squires & LouElla Saul; a revision
of the cypraeid genus Muracypraea; documentation of the earliest known abalone
(Late Cretaceous of the Santa Monica Mountains, LA Co.); and range extension
of Miocene Muracypraea in southern Peru.
