Smithflat, El Dorado County, California
Hundreds of small diamonds have been found in California during mining for placer gold. This gem-quality crystal is the largest stone recorded from the famous Smithflat area. It was found in 1896 by Bert Carpender who sold it to W. F. Alma of Boston. Later it was acquired by Dr. George F. Kunz of Tiffany's in New York.
Size: 6 mm (1.95 carats)
Acquired: 1972 purchase, County Acquisition Fund.
Disposition: On display in the Hixon Gem Vault exhibit.
