Ichinokawa mine, Ehime Prefecture, Japan

For 1,300 years, Japan's Iyo Province (now Ehime Prefecture) has been know as an important source of antimony (Sb). The Ichinokawa deposit, worked from about 1679 to 1957, is known for producing the world's finest stibnite crystals. This exceptional specimen was brought back from Japan in the late 19th century by a Jesuit missionary.

Size: 36 cm tall

Acquired: 1998 donation from Melvin S. Hindin.

Disposition: On display in the Mineral Classics exhibit.
