Tsavorite, one of the most beautiful varieties of garnet, was discovered in East Africa in the early 1970s. It usually is found as crude gem-quality nodules. Since 1987, a few gem-quality crystals such as this one with exceptionally well-formed and lustrous faces have been found at the Karo Pit in Tanzania.

Acquired: 1990 donation from Dr. William L. Harville.
