Black Pine mine, Philipsburg, Montana

Until large well-formed crystals of veszellyite were discovered at the Black Pine mine in the early 1970s, the largest known crystals of this very rare mineral were microscopic. This multiple crystal is one of the largest and finest from this mine.

Size: 2.7 cm tall

Acquired: 1995 Gem & Mineral Council purchase; 1997 adoption in honor of Oreste G. Alessio through the Adopt-a-Mineral program..

Disposition: On display in the Systematic Mineralogy exhibit.
