The Office of the Registrar and the Conservation Section operate under the Research and Collections branch of the Museum. Susan Oshima, Chief Registrar, and Kristen Hayashi, Assistant Registrar, work to ensure the safety and integrity of all collections and incoming loans at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County family of museums, including the George C. Page Museum at the La Brea Tarpits and the William S. Hart Museum. Susan and Kristen endeavor to maintain appropriate legal documentation for these artifacts and specimens, whether stored within the collections or on display. They process and update records of all collection transactions at the Museum, including donations, purchases, incoming and outgoing loans, exchanges, deaccessions, and field-collected specimens, and report this activity each year to the Museum Boards. They also administer coverage of the collections under the Museum's Fine Arts insurance policy, and help to coordinate museum exhibitions.

The Conservation Section, affiliated with the Office of the Registrar, serves all of the museum’s diverse collections. Tania Collas, Conservator, collaborates with the collections managers and other Research and Collections staff to identify and address preservation concerns within the collections, whether on exhibit or in storage. She coordinates integrated pest management, disaster preparedness for collections, and other programs that help preserve the museum’s artifacts and specimens.
