Description: Ray-finned Fish

Specimen location: Niobrara Chalk of Northwestern Kansas

Name means: "first barracuda"

Protosphyraena was one of the last of a group of swift, predatory ray-finned fishes without bony vertebrae. Scientists have never found a complete skeleton of this fish; only the head, pectoral girdle and tail are known. This specimen is the most complete skull of Protosphyraena known.
