Squalicorax falcatus
(SKWAHL ih KOR aks)
Description: Ancient Shark
Specimen location: Niobrara Chalk of Northwestern Kansas
Fossil teeth are by far the most common piece of evidence of ancient sharks. Because their skeletons are made of soft cartilage rather than bone, fossilized shark skeletons are uncommon. In this rare specimen, both jaws and 86 vertebrae were recovered.
