Saurodon leanus

Description: Ray-finned Fish

Specimen location: Niobrara Chalk of Northwestern Kansas

Name means: "lizard tooth"

Saurodon belongs to the same order as Xi phactinus and Gillicus. In its lower jaw, Saurodon had an unusual pointed bone known as a predentary, extending well beyond its upper jaw. These fish may have skimmed the surface of the water, eating whatever they found.
