SAVAGE ANCIENT SEAS | MONOLOGUES | VOLVICERAMUS grandis

Volviceramus grandis

(VOL vih ser AM is)

Description: Giant Clam

Specimen location: Niobrara Chalk of Northwestern Kansas

This unusual bivalve had two halves (or valves) of different size. The left valve was much larger and was coiled, resembling an ammonite shell. The right side was much smaller and flat. When alive, the clam would have rested on its "coiled bowl side" with its other valve acting as a lid.
