North Campus

We’re taking the Museum outside! A new outdoor nature area is sprouting up around the Natural History Museum, bringing a fun and interactive park and habitat area right into the heart of the city. Think of it as the city’s new backyard, filled with a range of garden environments and interactive opportunities for visitors of all ages to watch birds and search for bugs, stroll along a creek, ramble through a grove of trees, and gaze at butterflies and bees in a new Pollinator Garden.

The Big Picture of Going Green

By late 2012 and 2013, the Museum’s North Campus — the area bordered by the rose garden to the east, Menlo Avenue to the west and Exposition Boulevard to the north — will be a much greener place, teeming with life. The newly constructed Expo Line will stop at Exposition and Vermont by summer 2011, bringing visitors from across the city to the NHM’s front door. And just north of the Museum buildings, what was long a paved parking area is being transformed into a multifaceted outdoor extension of the Museum, an outdoor realm where plants and animals can be interpreted in a living context.

Our Partners

The Museum has partnered with an energetic and talented team to see the North Campus vision become reality. The team includes Don Webb of the Cordell Corporation, Jorge de la Cal, AIA, of CO Architects, and Mia Lehrer + Associates. All are California-based firms. Cordell Corporation is a privately held management firm specializing in the development, renovations and management of major public projects. CO Architects’ cultural work includes historical renovations of NHM’s 1913 Building — and new designs for libraries, civic centers, museums, and performing arts centers. MLA has earned a reputation for integrating design with engagement in order to create sites that a community can embrace.

Community Science

As we look forward to the new outdoor spaces in North Campus and the opportunities they’ll provide for Museum visitors to participate in observing and studying nature, we already have outstanding community science projects going on right now!
