FAQs

When should I register my class for a field trip?

Register early for the best selection of possible dates and times.  Registration begins in August for the academic year. Many dates, especially during the spring, fill up months in advance, as do reservations for field trip extras like the Discovery Center and Insect Zoo, Pavilion of Wings, Spider Pavilion, and Dinosaur Encounters.

How much does it cost to visit the Museum?

School groups, pre-kindergarten - 12th grade, that schedule their reservations at least three weeks in advance receive free admission.  Please note that additional chaperones (in excess of the one to five ratio for pre-K groups, or in excess of the of the 1 to 10 ratio for K - 12th grade groups) will be charged a discounted admission fee of $8.00/person. 

The entrance fee to the Pavilion of Wings and Spider Pavilion is $1 per person. 

There is a $10 parking fee for each school bus, $12 for charter buses, and $8 for each automobile.  Parking fees are not set by NHM and are subject to change without notice.

When is the best time to visit the Museum?

Visiting early in the school year (September - March) is greatly encouraged. The Museum is less crowded at this time, and your group will be able to better appreciate and explore the Museum's halls and special exhibits.

Special programming for pre-kindergarden groups is offered October - December.

Special programming for 2nd grade groups is offered January - March.

Where can students eat their lunch?

There is a lovely picnic area and rose garden in the park that surrounds the Museum. 

Please note: No food or drink is allowed inside the Museum, and the Museum does not provide a facility for storing lunches.  All lunches must remain on the bus(es) or in your car.

What do I need to do if I want to visit the Discovery Center and Insect Zoo?

Due to limited capacity, all school groups are required to make an additional reservation to visit these areas. When registering for a school visit, be sure to indicate if you would also like a reservation in the Discovery Center and Insect Zoo and Pavilions. These reservations fill quickly, so book early.

How many chaperones should I bring?

Always have a sufficient number of chaperones.  A one to ten ratio is required for all groups. 

For kindergarten through high school groups, additional chaperones are welcome and will be admitted for the reduced admission price of $8.00/person. 

For pre-kindergarten, Head Start, and Child Development Center groups, a chaperone to student ratio of one to five is recommended.  Additional chaperones are welome and will be admitted for the reduced admission price of $8.00/person.

What should I do when I get to the Museum?

Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment.  Museum staff will check-in your school group at the Museum's South Entrance.  Bring your reservation form and be prepared to provide the number of students and adults in your group.

What else is there to do in Exposition Park?

Within walking distance of NHM are three other popular school group destinations: the California Science Center (including the Air and Space Gallery), the California African American Museum, and the Exposition Park Rose Garden (seasonal).
