The Jurassic, spanning from approximately 200 to 145 million years ago, records the evolutionary divergence of most dinosaur groups (including birds). During this time dinosaurs became the most dominate vertebrate group of terrestrial ecosystems. The Dinosaur Institute houses important holdings of Jurassic specimens, in particular, from the Late Jurassic. Among these are many small vertebrates from the Fruita Paleontological Area in western Colorado.
